Ever thought of how the toys we used to play with are so different from the ones kids these days get? While I think kids of today have it easy and get some of the most awesome toys, I’d still like to get a chance to show them that we had some pretty cool stuff back in the day as well. Here’s a fun video from the guys over at Waterloo Labs that combines toys from two different generations that both rely on imagination – the Kinect and an Etch-a-Sketch.
The guys have come up with a way to merge the Kinect and an Etch-a-Sketch with the help of an Arduino and LabVIEW. The hack uses the Kinect to transmit motion to the Arduino board which in turn turns the knobs of the Etch-a-Sketch, allowing Kinecthackers with artistic tendencies a new creative way to create and showcase their masterpieces.
While the project is in no way groundbreaking, it does show some of the fun experiments one can do with a Kinect and some technical know-how. And it gives a pretty good background around the technology involved. This is perhaps a simple weekend project that beginners can take on or one that you can work on with kids, hopefully turning them into future hackers and developers as well.
Also, seeing the bloopers at the end was worth the price of admission.
