The past entries featured robots responding to human commands and also having autonomous navigation but this Kinect Robot creates a 3d reconstruction of a room. Youtube user squadbot showcased this Kinect-mounted robot and how it can create a 3d map using the Kinect’s depth camera. The robot consists of an Atom powered computer with wireless internet, a Hokuyo URG-04LX Range Finder, a customized voltage distribution board, an external Li-poly battery and the iRobot Create Robot.
The video shows how the Kinect Robot scans the room and then transmits data to the computer. This then generates a 3d map which can be used by the user and the robot for further exploration. This is especially handy in cases wherein the user has zero visibility and requires an initial scan before proceeding. Many are already christening this project as the “Skynet” of our time.
